Headway Somerset is a branch of Headway UK and was first established in 1991 to provide support, advice and comfort to people with acquired brain injuries, their families and carers. Our main aim is to improve their quality of life and to reawaken the belief in people with brain injury that they are able to live an enjoyable and useful existence.

Through the service we provide at our Headway Houses and through our Outreach Service, people recovering from brain injuries have the chance, not only to participate in therapeutic activities to aid their rehabilitation, but also to work towards regaining their self confidence and becoming independent again. In some cases that can even mean a return to employment.

We have three Headway Houses, one in Yeovil which provides support for people in South Somerset, one in Bridgwater covering the Somerset Coastal region and one at Henton, near Wells, which services the Mendip area. You can read more about our Houses on the Headway Houses page.  Our Outreach Service covers most of the county now and provides a more intensive one-to-one support and development facility for people who need greater input.

Brain injury is a condition which completely changes the lives, not only of those who suffer the injury, but also of their families. The brain is a very complex organ and different parts of it control different elements of the way we able to operate, for example movement, speech, memory or sight. The symptoms of brain injury are therefore determined for each individual by which part or parts of the brain are damaged. If you want to learn more about brain injury and the effects it can have on peoples lives, visit our page About Brain Injury and Client Case Studies.

They are based in Nottingham and help us with the training of staff, expert advice about issues such as human resource management, disability law and benefits, produce guideline policies and help with a host of other matters. But most importantly they help to heighten the profile of brain injury and influence policy and legislation at Government level. They produce clear policy statements on such things as boxing and the wearing of cycle helmets, some of which you can read on our page About Headway UK. And if you want to learn more about their work visit their own website at www.headway.org.uk.

Headway Somerset is a charitable organisation and therefore has to rely on the goodwill of the community it serves in order to continue providing its services. In particular we require people to volunteer their time to help us, because without them we would be unable to provide the level of support needed by people with brain injuries, some of whom have quite severe conditions. If you would like to help us, or give a donation of some kind, you can find out how on our How You Can Help page.

You will soon be able to contact us through our Contact Us page, but until that is ready you can reach us by leaving a message in our Guest Book, by ringing Liz Batten, our Secretary, on 01935 863226 or through our e-mail address: info@headwaysomerset.org.uk. We look forward to hearing from you.
